WordCamp Philippines 2008

Labels: , ,

I will be attending the WordCamp Philippines 2008 on 6 September 2008 (Saturday), from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM at College of St. Benilde, Taft Avenue, Manila.

The WordCamp is the premier event for WordPress users and developers. WordPress is arguably the #1 blogging platform in the world today. I'm posting this intent to attend the Camp to learn more about the power of Wordpress and its features. And I believe that this is the best venue for WP enthusiasts to come together and get updated on the latest. But, primarily, I want to see the comparison of Wordpress to other web hosting site as blogging engine and also as a full-featured content management system for Web sites.

The WordCamp will have the following components:
  • Deployment (Usage) Track
  • Development Track
  • Panel Discussions
  • WP Install-Fest
  • After Party!
You may check WordCamp Philippines 2008 for more details. This is organized by the Mindanao Bloggers. Also thanks for the following sponsors who are supporting this event:
See you in WordCamp!

GenSan Hosts Mindanao Bloggers Summit 2 in October 2008

Labels: , ,

A temporary MBS 2 semi-poster designed by Sir Ariel Lalisan

General Santos City, fresh on its bid to become the Convention Capital of Region XII, will be the site of the biggest gathering of bloggers everywhere in the island - the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit or MBS 2, for short.

NAME OF EVENT:
The 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit (MBS 2)

THEME:
Mindanawan: Paminawon Intawon. Blogging the Mindanao Consciousness

DATE:
October 25, 2008, Saturday, during the GenSan E-Business Week of the DTI and the city government.

This came after the organizers of the 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit held last September in Davao City led by Blogie Robillo, and his group, The Usual Suspects, felt it was time for the Tuna Capital to take the lead.

The Socsksargen Bloggers have been thinking about it ever since Mark Aethen Agana of Koronadal, spearheaded a SOCCSarGen Blog Seminar last February which gathered almost two hundred participants at the Notre Dame of Marbel University.

The positive response of young people from Socsksargen to that seminar led me and seminar speakers Hecky Miñoza, Bro. Vince Celeste, FMS, Sir Ariel Lalisan, together with Gensan Trade portal owners Job and Liezl Oberio, photobuff Toto Lozano, Website designer Dennis Paul Custorio, and teacher Sandra Bonrusto to go a step higher - host an even bigger event, this time to be held in GenSan.

The 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit in Davao drew more than 150 participants and so to reach that record, we have invited nationally-famous bloggers (along with Mindanao-based personalities) to make up the exciting list of resource speakers.

One who confirmed to be talking on the summit is the Inquirer columnist and Cable TV’s The Explainer, Manuel L. Quezon III himself that “It would be an honor to attend, please let me know the details.”

And since this is GenSan, the Tuna Capital of the Philippines, our culmination activity will be the most-sought after among visitors, the SASHIMI NIGHT!

Now, if those aren’t more than enough reasons to be in GenSan, for the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers Summit on October 25, 2008 I really don’t know what else will be.

9th t'nalak festival in south cotabato

Labels: , ,

KORONADAL CITY, Philippines (my hometown) — The ninth edition of the annual T’nalak Festival of South Cotabato kicked on July 11, Friday to once again showcase the province’s investment and tourism potentials.

Activities lined up for the festivities include an agri-trade fair, bazaars, concerts, cultural shows, street dancing competition, grand fireworks display competition and visits to various tourism attractions in the province.

The activities will culminate on July 18, the province’s foundation anniversary. For the festival schedule of activities click here.

FYI: The festival was named after the T’nalak, an indigenous, colorful cloth woven by women of the T’boli tribe. The cloth has brought recognition to the province in the national and international scene. It is said that the design of the t'nalak cloth was a creative pattern that the women of t'boli tribe dreamed.

This is my first time not to witness the festival but I'll be celebrating it with them still.

the lettermen concert tour in marbel

Labels: , ,

The Lettermen, "Live in Concert" at
South Cotabato Gymnasium,
Koronadal City on July 4, 2008, Friday.

Twenty million records and seven thousand concert shows ago, three young men in letter sweaters hit the music charts with their first single, "The Way You Look Tonight." The soft, melodic tune was a departure from the hard-driving music of that day, but listener requests made it a must for disc jockey play lists all over the country. In almost every poll, The Lettermen became "Best Vocal Group" or "Best New Group."

Hit after hit followed: "When I Fall in Love," "Theme From A Summer Place," "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," "Hurt So Bad," and "Shangri-La" as well as over fifty albums filled with special romantic Lettermen harmony. One of their better known songs, "Goin' Out of My Head/Can't Take My Eyes Off You," was a first of its kind when it was released; it was the first hit record ever to completely integrate two songs as one.

Although they have had more than their share of recording successes, The Lettermen pride themselves on their live performances. Each show is a valentine to every audience as they maintain a whirlwind touring schedule throughout the United States and abroad.

For over 30 years, the popular singing trio has been capturing the interests of individuals at public events, private conventions, and special benefits

Their universal music appeal has resulted in successful world tours around the globe. And now, they are in the Philippines, to warm the hearts of millions of Filipinos.

They will prove that love ballads have a universal appeal and will continue to stand the test of time on their “Live in Concert” at South Cotabato Gymnasium, Koronadal City on July 4, 2008, Friday.

For tickets and more information please call 63.2.532.8883.

kublai's haven

Labels: , ,

Last week, I was in Davao city to visit some friends and to meet Te Kix, the Jesuit Volunteer of the Philippines batch 28, who is in-charge in organizing the youth groups in Mindanao. She is from Ateneo de Naga Univesity and currently finishing her term as volunteer in the Pathways program.

I arrived late night in the city because I left Marbel at 3pm and I waited at the front gate of Ateneo de Davao University, where my friends will meet me. We had our dinner immediately at the Pastil store near the university, then we went to Matina Town Square (MTS) to hang loose and appreciate the gig. We bought some cool rummaged items in the stalls located in the center of the square.

In the next morning, Emyat, Te Sandra, Te Kix and I met to discuss about the sharing the light program in Davao, a grant from Children’s hour. At our meeting, I suggested that we need a healing ritual because we had a busy day. In this meeting we had to decide on where to continue our discussion and wherein we can relax. We visited several places including a videoke place where they rent out private rooms for small groups. Not quite right for our group. We looked at a garden setting but decided that the mosquitoes might not be too friendly in the place. By 2pm, Emyat, a social worker, who is a pathways volunteer also, said that there was one more place we need to see: Ponce Suites.

posing in front of the Ponce Suite (From left: teSandra, Moi, and teKix)

We decide to visit the Ponce Suites in Doña Vicente Village in Davao City, where Kublai’s artworks were displayed. We had a knack for surprises. Ponce Suites took our breath away and yes! This is the place for a healing ritual, and relaxation. We roamed around the four-floor suite where inside Kublai’s art gallery is open for public.

kublai's gallery

kublai's artworks everywhere

This small hotel is owned by his mother and his older brother. In his gallery, different works of arts, created and made by him were showcased. These artworks were depicting the culture of Filipinos, some were expression of his love of his family, and some were his thoughts and perception, and some talks about his perspective in different topics.

some of his sculpture outside the hotel (From left: Emyat, teSandra, and Moi)

He finished Fine Arts at UPD, and has busied himself as a sculptor and painter. He was named also as one of the national artist of the country, the finest one in Mindanao. In fact he made the huge durian sculpture at the Davao International Airport and Sultan Kudarat town's kampilan statue. He is also "famous" for his sculptures in the Enigmata Treehouse Galeri.

more of the sculptures made using cement as medium (From left: Emyat, teKix, and teSandra)

He has been commissioned to do the many sculpture works in Mindanao. He is master in using cement as a medium of his art.

We had an iced tea party on the rooftop of the building while enjoying the free WI-FI service and cool ambience. He described his creative process on the rooftop of Ponce Suites which is said to be reminiscent of Gaudi's architecture, the energy and atmosphere there which envelop the space and which I slowly felt was warming my tired bones and spirit. It was totally a perfect relaxing place if you and your friends want to have some fine time.

There is too many to story about my experience in that place so if you happen go to in Davao city, do not miss Ponce Suites. (This is not a paid post;I just want to appreciate the place and his work)

You may want to see more of his gallery and artworks, click here.

interfaith prayer rally

Labels: , ,

If you learn about eye procedures cosmetic surgeons can perform why don’t also learn about participating in nation building?

An interfaith prayer rally in celebration of EDSA I and for call and search for TRUTH was organized last February 25, 2007 in Koronadal City.

The prayer rally was participated in by the Catholic clergy, Kabataan Party List, Gabriela, Sector of Farmers, and us, the students who participated and represented the few students in the University but declares ourselves us individual supporters.

The chamber of Commerce in the Province, and many on truth-side government officials and employees joined the rally.

It was mainly organized to awaken the minds of the Filipino people to participate in search for truth and stop corruption.

It was lightly organized and ended peacefully with lighting a candle and dancing and singing of the truth. A Piso Para Kay Jun Lozada movement was also made to support him.

The rally was entertaining yet substantial. I was really inspired to see people unite and have one voice for a better Philippines.

Some political science students from the university where there and joined the interfaith rally. I saw Toto Lozano also busy taking pictures in the area.

There will be another Prayer Rally that will be organized on February 29, 2008. I hope more students will speak out and participate in this noble activity.

God bless.

1mbs: not the last

Labels: , , ,

Am I late to post this?

I hope it is not.
Anyway, I was in the first ever Bloggers Summit in the Mindanao which was held at 4th Floor NCCC Mall, Davao and was organized by the Usual Suspects.
Ariel and I arrived at the venue about 10:45pm and were lucky that the event had just started. We did not heard the keynote speech on Blogging and Participatory Governance of Davao City Councilor Peter Laviña where he addressed that blogs were effective for participative governance.
In our entrance to the summit Bob Martin who is staying in Mindanao for almost 5 years and owns Mindanao.com and many other proPhilippines travel blog. He gave a speech on Travel and Technology. He featured his experience in Mindanao and he travels a lot for earnings.
A “Promote-Your-Blog activity” was done to fill some idle time in the program. Maybe it was part of the program. They gave also freebies (IBM Pens, IBM Notepads, Google package, Domain and hosting package, MBS shirts and caps) in random raffle. And I won an IBM pen, and also Ariel in the latter part of the program. Conrad won an IBM notepad and Dulce (http://dulcenegosyante.com/) won a domain and hosting package. The four of us were in the same table and been together during the summit. I met Winston of batangyagit.com who was very accommodating and friendly in person.

I met Aice of Aice concepts. She was good in person.

Fr. Albert Alejo, SJ’s was one of the speakers also for that event. He was also one of the authors of Ehem! And an active advocate of clean governance and nation building. In the summit he talks about Socio-Cultural Mindset of Mindanaoans. I was really inspired of his talk and sharing on how to keep peace and order in Mindanao. He identified clearly to where the conflict in Mindanao rooted - Culture and Perception of Mindanaoans. I was moved by the music video presented, the “Meme na Mindanaw”. I want to have a copy of that video for our advocacy also. I hope a can grab one.

Winston texted that night before that there will be free lunch sponsored by Dimsum Diner and “everything” might be freely given. It was and we did enjoy it. Kuya Blogie joined us in our table while having lunch. And after a while he invited a guy from England who promotes and encourages bloggers to write about opensource and freeware. Winston was in our table also and he (I think enjoy the conversation with that English guy) confidently answered the question of the guy about outsourcing. Conrad and Dulce were sort of making fun of the guy because they can’t clearly understand what the guy was saying.

Aileen presented a Google Testimonial Video after the lunch.

Kim Castillo of Southisms‘shared on “Transistion from Emo to Niche Blogging”. One must make his/her blog unique from other bloggers to invite viewers and readers. Make your own world and space and open it to online people. Make a difference and be the difference in the blogger world.

Matt of Wordpress has also sent a video for the summit. He sent his regard for organizing such event. He was in Hawaii when he recorded the video. The summit got a support from the developer of wordpress.
Jayvee Fernandez talked about Problogging and new media. He promoted about blogging as a new profession wherein one can earn more than they can if they are in a conventional work. He owns the A Bugged Life.com and he was connected to the technology channel b5media, as an editor.
Marc Macalua who owns the SEO Philippines and Macalua.com shared about SEO programs and stuffs. He talked also about his profession and how much he earn on it. In the program he supposed to talk about How to Optimize Your Wordpress Blog for Top Search but he left his materials in manila so instead he shared on that things.
The Usual Suspect made a Resolution on the Role of Bloggers in Fostering Understanding & Peace in Mindanao. The resolution was so general that one can affirm and agree consently. It will bring and create more positive views of Mindanao.

A panel composed of successful bloggers were organized, Jayvee Fernandez, Marc Macalau, Andrew dela Serna, Abe Olandresand Bob Martin. They entertained questions from other bloggers of all sort related to blogging. I learnt so much from them and it inspires me more to blog and earn seriously.
After the program, Kuya Blogie invited us (Ariel, Conrad, Richard, and other far-places bloggers) for a [free] dinner. But before that we strolled around NCCC Mall while waiting for the Usual Suspects who were the organizers of this successful event. We spent our time most at the 9th Davao Trade Expo infront of the venue of the 1MBS. I met Ate sweet also in the mall while strolling. She suppose tojoin the summit but she had conflicting activities and promised to catch us at the party.

Bloggers' Party

We have dinner with the Usual Suspects at the Pinutos [I hope I spelled it correctly]. They have a kind-a-not-so-good service but the food was good. After dinner we went to Casa Habana where the Bloggers Fellowship Night was hosted.

The party started at 9pm and there were pica-pica and beers. Light beers. The organizers had also invited an entertainer for the night fun. S/he was hilarious and witty but kinda naughty also. Jehzeel Laurente sent a message to Kuya Blogie greeting the bloggers and congratulating the organizers for making the event possible.

They gave seven (7) domain and hosting package also that night and I luckly got one. How? That would be kept secret.

Until next time bloggers

Congratulations to the Usual Suspect for your leadership.
